Welcome

Welcome to Gamelanjourney.

I’m Daniel Dermitzel and here you’ll find  personal reflections, writings, recordings and meditations as well as information about projects I’ve been a part of or hope to be.

I cover topics ranging from mindfulness and peacemaking to organic farming, sustainability, cities and design. In the summer of 2026, after a period of inactivity, I am once again making frequent updates to this site, so I hope you’ll visit again from time to time.

And in case you’re wondering, the name Gamelanjourney refers to the ever-changing journey of life, like a shadow play set to the luminous sounds of an Indonesian gamelan ensemble.

I also invite you to visit my professional website where you can learn more about my work as a mediator and workshop facilitator, explore upcoming events, and read about my qualifications and educational background.

About mindfulness

“Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present moment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing.”

~ Thich Nhat Hanh, Vietnamese Buddhist monk, peace activist, prolific author, poet, and teacher, who founded the Plum Village Tradition, historically recognized as the main inspiration for engaged Buddhism

“Now the patient isn’t an individual person […] The patient is the planet. The patient are all these individual nations which are at war with each other and creating havoc in terms of destruction on unimaginable levels, human destruction and also eco-destruction on fantastic levels. […] I think the challenge is a very big one but I don’t know anything other than mindfulness that is actually remotely up to this challenge and that gives me a lot of hope in the face of so much despair and suffering on planet Earth at the moment.”

~ Jon Kabat Zinn, the creator of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, in an Instagram post by the Mind and Life Institute in June 2026.

These conditions can actually result in a dulling of our senses and an impoverished life experience in the midst of plenty. Mindful urban design can help address this problem by reducing …

Seventeen Theses for a Mindful City, Part Three — Sustainability

SUSTAINABILITY 9. Listening Deeply to Mother NatureOur success in creating a more ecological city hinges in part on our ability to discover the true abundance of our landscape and creatively design around it. Instead of iterating cookie-cutter urban development schemes throughout the world, urban planners need to learn to listen deeply and mindfully to the …
